Le Gun and The Black Squid, La Catastrophe

Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve has the pleasure to announce the exhibition of LE GUN.
Le Gun are the artists Neal Fox, Robert Rubbish, Stephanie Von Reiswitz, Chris Bianchi.LE GUN was founded in 2003 by a group of MA graduates from the Communication Art and
Design course at the Royal College of Art, London. Also, LE GUN is an independent narrative
illustration publication and provides a common ground for both emerging and established artists,
illustrators, writers and poets.

The Black Squid (Le Calmar Noir) were a group of surrealist artists based in Paris who broke off from
the core group of the surrealists in 1924 in disagreement with André Breton's manifesto and their
continued use of colour. François Lardon, Thomas Le Turk, Olga Tiktokova, Diego Mangina, and
Éduard Lezard were talented artists but little known outside their small bohemian circle and have since
faded into the margins of art history.

The group believed that dreams were always in black and white, and that the exclusive use of black
and white in art would make the everyday into a dreamscape. They claimed they had simultaneously
dreamed of a giant black squid who imparted their manifesto. Apart from exploring the squid as a
dream symbol for latent sexual desires, they revered black ink as a liquid of creation.

Not long after the split, on September 25th 1925, the five artists held a black and white banquet, the
exact motivations behind which remain unclear. They consumed a sumptuous meal and varied drinks,
and strange sounds were reported to have emanated from the room. All five artists left the banquet
intact and went their separate ways, but catastrophically all five found their demise in various ways the
very same night.

The debris of the mysterious final dinner was documented in minute detail. No poison was found, or
evidence of a suicide pact, and hypothesizing about what actually happened that night was for a while
a popular pastime in fashionable salons. Soon however the whole event faded into oblivion.

The original document detailing the exact layout of the room & the objects within it still exists.

As a group of artists working in black and white, LE GUN feel a strong connection to the Black Squid
group and were particularly intrigued by this age old mystery. As well as reproducing large scale
portraits of the Black Squid's elusive members, based on the group's original 'exquisite corpse'
drawings, LE GUN has attempted to recreate the final supper before the catastrophe, which will be
shown alongside the Black Squid's last known surviving painting.

Besides having collective exhibitions, performances and the self-titled Magazine, Le Gun have
produced large-scale communally executed drawings in London, opened a curiosity shop, cooperated
with Paul Smith for a clothing line, produced a music clip for Pete Doherty's Babyshambles and
recently did an impromptu window display/exhibition, talk,etc at Arrtco Collection in Beijing, China.t

Harriet Mead - Ghost of an Emu, ghost of a mower.

Following the launch of an extraordinary new multi-media art exhibition - Ghosts of Gone Birds – at the Liverpool School of Art & Design earlier this year, the show has grown and evolved during the summer and will now ‘manifest’ in London’s East End this November.

The ground-breaking exhibition, which highlights the growing extinction crisis and promotes The BirdLife Preventing Extinctions Programme, will be held in Shoreditch, at the Rochelle School, London E2. Doors open to the public on November 2nd and the event will run until November 23rd.

More than eighty leading artists, sculptors, musicians, writers and poets are contributing. Each artist has chosen a different extinct species and is producing a new piece of art that has been inspired by the bird and which celebrates its former life on earth. Original art featured in the show (as well as many limited editions) will be for sale, with a contribution from each transaction made to BirdLife. Individual artworks range in price from £200 to around £50,000.

Award-winning sculptor Harriet Mead’s stunning recreation of the extinct King Island Emu above, which she crafted from recycled agricultural implements, is just one great example of the two hundred or so fabulous artworks that will be on display in London.

Many of the contributing artists are still producing their pieces but among other selections already made are Jamie Hewlett – Hawaiian Crow; Rob Ryan – Stephen’s Island Wren; Ralph Steadman – Pallas’s Cormorant, Dodo and Liverpool Pigeon; and Greg Poole – Jamaican Red Macaw.

The natural rate of bird extinction is just one bird each century but in the last thirty years alone, 21 species have disappeared. At present, 189 are classified Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and, without immediate action, many of these will not be here in ten years’ time. One clear example is the albatross family, which is fast becoming the most threatened family of birds in the world. Dying at a rate of around one every five minutes albatrosses are disappearing faster than they can actually breed – so 18 out of the 22 species of albatross are now facing global extinction.

Ghosts of Gone Birds has been created and is being staged by filmmaker Ceri Levy, best known for his documentary film Bananaz about the rock band Gorillaz and Chris Aldhous, award-winning director of London creative consultancy GOODPILOT. “We’re aiming to raise a creative army for conservation and it’s fair to say that we have been floored by the response of the artists we’ve asked to create new work for us.” said Ceri Levy. ” To have the likes of Sir Peter Blake, Ralph Steadman, and Margaret Atwood producing new work for the exhibition is a clear illustration of the enthusiasm and support that exists for the cause. The project is reaching out to involve new audiences in conversations about conservation through their collective interest in contemporary art, music and poetry. We want to get people thinking about the diverse range of birds that have already been lost to extinction and introduce them to the work of BirdLife International.”

There is still hope and the BirdLife Partnership has shown that, with the right resources and targeted action, species can be saved. Burnt Oak: Life and Death in London Town - Theatrical debut for plumber Laurence Lynch

A WEST End plumber has taken the plunge and started a new career as a playwright.

A production of Soho resident Laurence Lynch’s first play, Burnt Oak: Life and Death in London Town, will open next month at the

Leicester Square Theatre – a venue for which Mr Lynch once did the plumbing.

He told the West End Extra: “This sort of thing doesn’t normally happen to someone who unblocks urinals for a living. With the lack of arts funding, I feel incredibly privileged that this has happened to me.”

Set in a council flat in Burnt Oak, the area of London where Mr Lynch lived before moving to Soho more than 20 years ago, the play will be directed by Mr Lynch’s friend, Nathan Osgood.

It is based on the experiences of the playwright and his friends.

“It’s about an incident that happened to a friend of mine,” said Mr Lynch. “Well, at least that’s what sparked me off. My friends thought I’d gone a bit mad, and I probably had, but I had to write this play. In part, it was for my own catharsis.”

With casting now in its final stages, rehearsals set to begin shortly, and plans to write further plays, Mr Lynch is spending less time on his day job.

“It’s difficult to focus on plumbing once you get into theatre,” he added. “My customers are suffering!”

One more for the Road!
18th July – 12th August

The title of the show, the colloquial exhortation heard at the conclusion of many an evening spent within the environs of Soho, is an apt one; the four artists are all associated with and draw their influences from that social vortex located within the square mile or so bounded by Oxford Street ,Charring Cross Road, Regent Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. Their work reflects the attractions, fascinations (and revulsions ) of this infamous locale as well as the wider concerns of the artist and the city. A city replete with inspiration and dissolution in equal measure.

The exhibition is comprised of four different perspectives, employing photography, painting and sculpture and is mostly of previously unseen work. The show is curated by Carlo Zenone.

The Artists

Mark David Reeve

Mark is better known as an illustrator and cartoonist, a winner of the Gillray Cup from the Political Cartoon Society (2004), as well as designing characters for itv's Spitting Image and 'Headcases' (2008). In recent years he has returned to his earlier preoccupation with painting, inspired by diverse influences from John Singer Sargent, Beardsley, Richard Dadd, the Symbolists and early Freud. In an era where the increasing ubiquity of the digital image threatens to drown the viewer in a deluge of mediocrity, Reeve believes that the painted image and in particular, the painted portrait is now, more than ever, a viable and meaningful mode of expression. Its uiniqueness and value enhanced rather than diminished by the vast turnover of uploaded ephemera.

Sasi is a previously un-exhibited photographer, and as such, we are honoured to have her debut exhibition of prints as part of this show. A major influence in Sasi’s photographic work, is in presenting a contemporary social documentation of London life. Reflecting a unique ability to capture emotionally expressive moments in her subjects, be they in the haze of social revelry, or more intimate and private self reflection.

In many cases Sasi turns her camera upon herself using self portraiture as a means of continued photographic exploration. Inspired by artists such as Nan Goldin, Irvin Penn and the Iconic images of 1930’s and 40’s Hollywood film, the initial surface sheen of an image is often peeled away to expose a deeper more meaningful narrative about people’s lives, relationships and experiences. As part of this show Sasi will be exhibiting a series of these self-portraits and related prints.

Bill Corbett

Bill is an established portrait photographer who has worked extensively in the fashion & music industries. In August 2006 his portrait of Bella Freud appeared in Harper's Bazaar. In 2007 he released a book of smokers portraits before the smoking ban came into force called; Gerry-Go-Round.

Bill will be exhibiting a selection of his Album cover shots of the bands Alabama 3 and Zodiac Mind Warp, as well his Colony Room photographs documenting the demise of the Soho drinking establishment. The show will include the launching of his new book of these photographs ‘Behind the Green Door’, It is through Bill’s association with these establishments and his informal relationship with the clientel, that he has been able to develop his enigmatic and perceptive style of portrait photography.

Carlo Zenone

Carlo is a painter and art therapist who is concerned with the process and function of painting, as well as the end result of the finished piece. His work explores figurative, portraiture and architectural city scenes, but is most passionate about St Paul’s Cathedral and the views along the Thames. His work is often semi abstract rendered in a thick impasto style.

‘My art is more than an attempt to capture or document the world around me. I try to create an experience which is like taste or smell, something that lingers with the viewer, informing their experience, not only of my work, but of their lives. Paintings are not only of significance on a gallery wall, but should be carried around in the minds and imaginations of those who they touch. Like children, they have lives of their own beyond that which the artist intends, and that, to me, is where art comes alive’.

Archeologists, ‘normally dealing with ancient stuff’, believed that someone from our time may be able to reveal their provenance, given that the coins were minted during end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century – and deposited after 1932.

After several years of unsucessful investigation, containment and exhibition at the British Museum, much speculation, and a whole lot of story telling, the coins were also the subject of an inquest opened to find the owner. After hearing the evidence on 18 April 2011, the Coroner’s Court of the Inner North Borough of London concluded the case by deeming the find ‘Not Treasure’.

With the gold returned to its rightful owner and the case closed, questions remain surrounding aspects of its value and whether its legend as a rare contemporary find outweighs its rate on the open market. In art and popular contemporary culture, value is not dependent on precious materials, as treasure may be. There is no precedence and no Magistrate to rule. There is only the curious triangulation of value we assign between the viewer, the object and the market. Often notoriety equates to monetary value. So does the narrative form outweigh the material? Can the value we construct truly be translated into monetary terms? Let the excavation begin.

GALERIE8 presents a project initiated by celebrated artist and amateur London historian Adam Dant, which takes the discovery and narrative surrounding the “Hackney Hoard” as a starting point. What follows is an enquiry of the value and status placed on the contemporary art object led by invited artists, illustrators, writers and story tellers. Including an introduction by Terry Castle and artworks by Adam Dant, LE GUN artists, Matthew Killick & Last Tuesday Society, Annabel Tilley and Gavin Turk.

The Very Existence of the Queen Is Against Any Notion of Democracy

This is just one of a number of compelling charges set down by Morrissey in an article written for Hot Press, to coincide with the Queen's visit to Ireland

The Queen's visit to Ireland is part of a new Palace PR campaign to re-invent the Windsors. The message from the Queen will be the same as ever: who we are born to is more important than what we achieve in life.

It should be remembered by the Irish people that as recently as the turn of the 1980s the Queen supported Margaret Thatcher by not dismissing Thatcher as she allowed hunger strikers to die at the Maze Prison, most famously Bobby Sands, who was 27 years old. As Sands starved to death in protest at being tagged a 'criminal' and not a 'political prisoner' by the Thatcher government, the Queen sat in her Palace and said nothing. If the Queen had any human feelings for the Sands family or other hunger strikers then she did not express them.

The full meaning of the Monarchy is, like the Queen herself, a complete mystery to most people. It is protected from any investigations by ridiculous stories of trivia and wedding dresses and on-again-off-again soap-drama romances. The most revealing statement came from Commander Christine Jones of the Metropolitan Police last month, when she warned that any British people carrying anti-royal placards who are "seen in the vicinity of the royal wedding would be removed under the Public Order Act." This means that any political dissent in England is silenced in order to protect the royals, which in itself goes against every principle of democracy.

The very existence of the Queen and her now enormous family – all supported by the British taxpayer whether the British taxpayer likes it or not – is entirely against any notion of democracy, and is against freedom of speech. For a broad historical view of what the Queen is and how she "rules", examine Gaddafi or Mubarak, and see if you can spot any difference.

You won't be able to.

The Queen also has the power to give back the six counties to the Irish people, allowing Ireland to be a nation once again. The fact that she has not done so is Fascism in full flow. What else could it be? Name one other European country that is controlled by its neighbour?

dancing about there was lots of drunken german

later in the bar there was a load of london bods

dance to the 8os hits and french drinking songs that where non stop from the

we saw countless police riot vans water canon
trucks and and such like. the most i have ever seen
as we where walking we went to look at what was
going on and we came upon a couple of hundred
protesters down a street they where marching against
gentrification this was the day before may day in Berlin
and so there was lots of police and anarchists warming
up for there yearly may day battle i was told that the riot police are
called anti conflict squad in german land.

In the summer of 1976, Dave Bowie and his special friend mr Iggy Pop set out to make a new career in a new town.
dave Bowie moved seeking to escape the personal madness and the massive coke habit he had picked up in Los Angeles, he settled in the undistinguished area of Schöneberg which was noted mainly as the setting for Christopher Isherwood's Goodbye to Berlin.Dave moved to Hauptstrasse 155.While in berlin dave made three lps and produced two of mr pops they hang out drank coffee drank beer eat out went clubing took drives out of the city,
So while in berlin i made the trip over to his old flat the street his house is on reminded me of a suburb of burssels theres not much to see so after i took a few photo me and my kate went to the cafe that mr.pop and bowie used to use for morning coffees and night time beers we had a drink it was nice and chilled, it is a gay cafe/bar berlins oldest one i think. there was only one other person in the bar having a beer we paid up and left and headed into town to see some more of berlin.

In 2007 London based artist collective Le Gun discovered a briefcase believed to have belonged to the late jazz pirate and trout tickler George Melly. Snapshots, a diary and other items in the case revealed a narrative based around a room which Le Gun attempt to reconstruct into three-dimensional reality. "The room is a collection of intrinsically linked and inseparable elements. Individual pieces of work that compliment, and validate each other, giving each other life, history and future." This may be by a long shot, but this book I just read is a TRIP, yo!

I mean it! Le Gun 1,2,3 commemorates the first three editions, first published around 2004, of probably the most mentally excruciating yet cutting edge magazine I’ve ever seen: 202 pages worth of iconoclasm but sheer craziness considering you have the PDF like I do. I’d honestly be lyin’ to y’all by sayin’ that I could grasp every concept behind the bulk of the material, or “pictorial poems” as I saw noted somewhere.
Don’t believe me? What the hell would you think if you were to see some all red cover art with a three-legged man standing in front of a window? What about a black-and-white sketch of a woman takin’ a shit in front of her husband with a caption reading “LOVE IS?” That shit might freak you out, too!

Well, um…Le Gun 1,2,3 does come courtesy of London’s thought-provoking Royal Academy of Art alumni-turned-editorial brainchildren Robert Greene, Neal Fox, Chris Bianchi, and Bill Bragg along with graphic designers Matthew Appleton and Alex Wright. It was even better to read Andrzej Klimowski’s, the Royal Academy’s Professor of Illustration, front row seat narrative for how Le Gun all began leading up to the progress of the visually stunning collection (or abomination in some areas). At first glance, I couldn’t agree with their esteemed mentor more that Le Gun at first wasn’t organized worth a damn. It was quite “titillating” in way too many sections – either these guys have a healthy obsession with nude women throughout the entire text or areolas are nothing more than a novelty. DAMN! I asked myself a million times as I sift through the literature, “What’s with all of the damn risqué thinking?” It’s kinda creepy, don’t you think?

However, there is raw wit, irreverent humor, and social commentaries between the pages that I can appreciate. This shit will fuck you up in the head if you ain’t careful. Something was up when I saw the picture of the girl with her hand covering her mouth in the first few pages. Imagine a crucifix with an out-to-lunch sign tacked in the center. I was on the floor laughin’: knowin’ that in the back of my mind that the average American would act a damn fool over this! Think about it; doesn’t it make you wonder how many folks would question this or totally get pissed off? Oh well…I thought the Steven Seagal head on the bird body was kinda funny, too.

Anyway, Le Gun is so wild and avant garde, it’s brilliant…in concept I might add. I do like the variation of visual art – the black and white still photographs, collages meshed within the sketches, quotes in gargantuan block fonts, pseudo-comic strips with captions in; around; and underneath the images, distorted yet demented caricatures, and hallucinogenic-lookin’ stories. The storyboards and layouts at the end of each issue are a nice touch. Once we get to segue into the second and third volumes, we finally get some color scheming goin’ on with sleeker, well-defined imagery (and neater penmanship, of course). I actually prefer when Le Gun transitions into this children’s storybooks-looking format. Yes, Le Gun is everything Herbert Fischl says in the foreword: timeless fantasies built with ink-stained hands and common ground.

Le Gun is without reservation an uber psychedelic alt-world: in other cases, just a lot of shit goin’ on (probably too damn much for some of y’all). LOL!!

Must Not Miss – Eye To Exit – an exhibition by LE GUN and Bare Bones.

Bare Bones and LE GUN have entirely covered the walls, floors and ceilings of the Red Gallery in ink, paint, pens, paper, possibly blood, snot and tears.

The opening night saw monstrous gangs of arty types, fans and press, blocking Rivington Street to get inside to see what the various artists had created.

I grabbed a second with Neal Fox, one of LE GUN’s original artists, about the show, Bare Bones, George Melly and the Die Die My Darling wall.

“It’s been good to do something back in London after a couple of years of doing shows abroad… there were a few drinks spilt and handbags thrown along the way but we got there in the end, by the skin of our teeth… George Melly’s son Tom came to the show and was smiling the whole night at the drawings of his dad and that was one of the best things about it all for me.”

Referring to the Unknown Room, one of the show’s main attractions, showing life-size drawings of the bizarre – based on the contents of George Melly’s Briefcase… containing plasters, pill, condoms and other paraphernalia.

Venture a little further (if you dare) and you hit the Bare Bones cinema (with some really interesting shorts, one of which was created by Alex Turvey) and the Die Die My Darling wall.

“Those drawings are some late night beer fueled pieces by Bare Bones artists, hard to remember who exactly, it was a pretty crazy night.”

Rough Trade Shops are teaming up with Le Gun Magazine & Bare Bones to create and curate a night of music & art to remember in the sweaty bowels of The Red Gallery. The legendary Rough Trade Shops have been trading now for 35 years and their reputation as a true independent has gained them global acclaim. This is a meeting of music & art like no other with Le Gun's macabre punk ethos & Rough Trade's musical pedigree hand-picking some of their favourite bands & DJs.

Caribou
Caribou is Canadian Dan Snaith's brainchild, who formerly recorded under the moniker Manitoba. He incorporates Electronic Psychedelia, Krautrock rhythms, and Breakbeat drums and creates a swirling, lush, musical panorama. Caribou's 2010 release 'Swim' was Rough Trades album of the year with good reason. Dan's DJ sets take you on a journey through all manner of styles & textures, they're something special to behold.

Bo Ningen
Japanese noise merchants Bo Ningen are renowned for their powerful psychedelic live onslaughts. You can hear the past in their wall of sound and massive melodies, but the past re-imagined - from Butoh to Black Sabbath. They update the j-rock template with elements of kraut-rock, metal, hardcore and funk scratched all over it.

Kutmah
DJ Kutmah aka Justin McNulty is a veteran of the L.A. Beats Scene and a key figure in the Dublab / Low End Theory / Brainfeeder creative community. Kutmah's DJ sets could include anything from his own unique slabs of Hip Hop fuzz, rare Egyptian Funk to hot off the press exclusives from his L.A. friends all guaranteed to raise the roof.

Cloaks
To say that Cloaks are swimming against the tide would be something of an understatement; as opposed to offering the listener a breath of fresh air, they have created a sound so dense it's closer to giving them a boot to the face. With their billowing bass and shredded metallic klanks, leading to apt comparisons of Trent Reznor performing through Jah Shaka's stacks.

Action Beat
Action Beat is an improvised Noise / No-Wave punk band, heavily inspired by early Sonic Youth, The Ex, Glenn Branca and other avant guitar ensembles. When it comes to action beat, improvisation is the operative word, although the band comprises a core of around five musicians, their cast can expand to as many as fourteen for their live shows. a normal gig will have at least three guitarists, a bassist and more often than not four drummers. Intense energy from start to finish.

LE GUN/BARE BONES REVIEW ON THE LONDONIST

A straggly group of strange Edwardianly bearded types spilling out onto a Hackney street? It must be a gallery opening, right? Well, yes, correct. Set in Shoreditch, next to the dead boarded up space that was The Foundry. However, let’s leave the world of artistic cliché
behind, the show, called ‘Close Eyes to Exit’ is by LE GUN and their offshoot Bare Bones, after all.

If you don’t know about LE GUN and Bare Bones, and you have any interest in modern illustration then hang your head in shame. We loved the show for LE GUN 4 The Family so much that we gushed like an excited teenager in the first flush of teen icon crush.

We’re glad to say that this new show didn’t disappoint. Two rooms of fantastic things, and one room showing a film, with a mural painted in the corner that admittedly didn’t grab us quite so much.

The entry room has, on one side, a series of artworks based on the Tarot archtypes. There’s a reworking of The Devil card, for example, which has a baby with a strangely old face and Hitler moustache. On the other side: oddities such as a red and black print of Shane McGowan eating records.

But this is not really the main exhibit. That honour goes to the Unknown Room, a 3-D lifesize drawing based upon the contents of the sadly departed George Melly’s briefcase. This contains a large map of Legundon (which appears to be near Belgium), a table which was impossible to photograph without it looking like a drawing, a drawing of the room itself and much else besides.

Really, please make an effort to see this show. You won’t be disappointed.
